Shoulder Pain

These conditions can occur alone or together. Shoulder Impingement syndrome is when the tendons are pinched between the humerus and the acromion or roof of the shoulder.

With prolonged or repeated movements, the structures can get worn, inflamed and painful, also leading to swelling and pain in the bursa. With wear and tear, bony outgrowths called spurs can occur, which further irritate the area.

Symptoms include shoulder aches and stiffness and these can be helped through osteopathic treatment that includes exercise and lifestyle advice. Frozen Shoulder is a very painful condition and the causes for it are unknown except that certain unresolved shoulder problems like bursitis, rotator cuff tears and impingement syndrome can lead to frozen shoulder if left untreated. Symptoms are experienced as pain and stiffness of the shoulder when moved in any direction, hampering most physical activity. Treatment for the condition is slow, taking up to several months. Therapeutic techniques will aim to relax the muscles, stretch the joint capsule and steadily increase the joint’s range of movement.

NICE - The National Institute for Clinical Excellence recommends a course of manual therapy, including spinal manipulation (including osteopathic), for the early management of persistent non-specific lower back pain.
