Shin Splints

Shin Splints, or medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) is an injury that occurs through repetitive activity on hard surfaces, in for example running, jumping, dancing, gymnastics, soccer, volleyball and basketball. Symptoms include aching or throbbing and tenderness of the lower shin that eases as the muscles warm up.

Treatment

It is important to consult an osteopath before the injury worsens. Treatment will include lifestyle and exercise advice and a range of therapeutic techniques to loosen muscles, free joints and reduce inflammation.

NICE - The National Institute for Clinical Excellence recommends a course of manual therapy, including spinal manipulation (including osteopathic), for the early management of persistent non-specific lower back pain.
